About being a go-getter

 What I remember is this:

I was always wanting more, to do more, to be more. The need for accomplishment? Need for approval? Not ever feeling enough? Being scared of missing out? All of the above and more (see what I did there?).

But what I remember is that I usually finished the general tasks quick, so I had time and brain power for the extra bits. That I liked doing the extracurricular activities, the additional homework, because they were always so much more exciting, actually making my brain work. Also knew that if I did the extra homework, then they gain advantage against future slacking on the every-day boring stuff, sort of banking it against them. I signed up to drawing and writing competitions, so I don't have to be in school for a day, volunteered to help the teachers so I can skip the downtime of being on the school yard. I did have friends, I liked playing with others and I enjoyed learning. But doing different things from the routine had a thrill. Trying to not miss out on anything kept me busy throughout school.

So when I went to university, I took this go-getter attitude with me, because it paid off before, and this is the only way I know to be. I made sure I applied for every award, field trip and business visit that I could afford. First year, I managed to get money from the university, just because my average was good enough and I wrote a single motivational letter. In the later years, I did the same again, and I gained exposure to two large businesses, visited London alone, then stayed in a luxury hotel. All in the name of learning, but for someone who was just getting to know UK and the UK hospitality sector, it was incredible opportunity. In 2017 I was asked if I wanted to participate in a debate competition. I said yes, and we ended up winning. Amazing experience. All stemming from looking for more to do.

In my workplaces, I followed suit. Always ask for more. And when you don't know what else to ask for, ask for exposure to new places. Or look for ways to learn something completely different, look for a new job where you can use the new knowledge. Just more, always more. Because if you don't ask, you don't get. Even if I still don't get it in the end, at least I tried. And I will keep on trying until I get something out of it, whether that's because of the need for accomplishment, recognition, or because of the fear of missing out. I am a go-getter and will always be.
